The United Nations program for the Environment recommends a change in the allocation of grants towards durable fishing.
This is not a surprise/scoop. Because of over exploitation and bad management fish stocks are getting smaller. In its latest report on biodiversity (1) The United Nations program for the Environment stated the following. Approximately 80% of world marine stocks of fish for which we have quantative information are being totally exploited or over exploited. Fish stocks have seen there biomass fall by 11% since 1977 ().
The "Green Economy" report explains that the desertification of the seas is not a fatality. Financial resource could be easily obtained in reallocation/ reprioritization of a part of the 27 billion dollars of grants allocated yearly to this sector. This reallocation of resources could be used to reduce the world wide fishing fleet. This float now stands at 1.3 million boats compared to 600,000 in 1970.
The United Nations program for the Environment suggests reform of fishing and to generalize certain practices such as negotiable quotas. Also the UN supports/fights for the development of protected marine zones.
